Pictures of God: A Child's Guide to Understanding Icons

Product Description

When the Son of God came down from heaven to become a man like us, He made it possible for us to see Him, touch Him, and make pictures of Him-pictures which we call icons. This little book brings God and His saints vividly into children's lives through icons, explaining in the simplest terms what each icon means and what the role of these holy pictures-and the holy stories and people they depict-can be in our lives. The colorful pages of Pictures of God are perfect for occupying little hands in church, for explaining the world of icons in the first years of Sunday school, and for read-aloud time with little ones at home.

This review is from: Pictures of God: A Child's Guide to Understanding Icons (Paperback)
This child-sized book is full of icons familiar to Orthodox Christians. Each page features an icon and offers, in easy-to-understand words, information about the icon and who it depicts.

Throughout the book, Skinas teaches the reader other important things, as well: why Orthodox Christians have icons in their homes and churches ("to remind us that Jesus is nearby"); how icons are treated ("we kiss them because it's our way of saying 'I love you' to God"); and to whom worship is directed through the icons ("icons don't call out for us to worship them - they're signs that point the way to God, the only one we worship").

This gem of a book is useful for introducing young Orthodox Christian children to the icons that they see all around them. The book is helpful for teaching older Orthodox Christian children how to treat icons that they meet - both the written ones and the living ones ("if everyone is made in the image of God, everyone is an icon of God..."). 5.0 out of 5 stars An informative introduction designed specifically for use with children, July 19, 2009

This review is from: Pictures of God: A Child's Guide to Understanding Icons (Paperback)
Icons are religious pictures most closely associated with the traditions, theology, and customs of Orthodox Christianity. A premier publisher of books of interest to Orthodox communities, Conciliar Press offers "Pictures Of God: A Child's Guide To Understanding Icons". This informative introduction designed specifically for use with children, explains what icons are, what they mean, and how they portray holy stories taken from scripture and other sources for the benefit of the faithful. The full color reproductions of representative examples of icons is simply flawless. "Pictures Of God" is a highly recommended means by which parents can provide their children with a true understanding of the value icons have within the Orthodox community and the believing hearts of the faithful.
